End of an Era

I am laboriously tapping this out on my phone at my daughter’s robotics completion because I forgot my computer’s power cable at home, which is five hours away. I would say that is emblematic of how my week has gone, but that would not do justice to the magnitude of events ensuing in the life of your humble web logger.

Thirty years. Three decades. That is a generation. A long time to devote to a career with a single employer. I would love to be able to announce my retirement, but I am still nearly a decade from that age. Instead, I was summarily and without warning let go via email on Monday by the new owners. Mergers and acquisitions usually lead to consolidation and elimination of redundancy. But it strikes me that after devoting more than half of my life to the organization a little heads-up wouldn’t be too much to ask.

I haven’t had to look for work in this century. It is…daunting.

Another blow came from a call from an old friend. I won’t share someone else’s tragedy here, but it hit hard. If bad news truly comes in threes then I want to cower in a dark corner somewhere. No more, please.

So, I am plunging headfirst into the strange, unknown waters of LinkedIn and related job search sites. I will find something, preferably before savings run out. Now, if I were typing this on my computer, I would add a link to a site where you could purchase my books. But unfortunately I don’t know how to do that with my phone. Par for this week’s course, I suppose. Sorry to burden you, but if I can’t vent on my own web log, where can I?

UPDATE. Back home. Being sick doesn’t help, but perhaps ten hours of bed rest will go some way to alleviate that anyways. Following are a few links if you’re looking for something to read and might incidentally want to help keep the lights on at Casa Lizzi if the job hunt does not produce immediate results. Thick As Thieves. NB, please buy the brown cover. If you buy the amber cover, Amazon keeps all the money. Boss. Captain. Warlord. Now, back to sending out resumes in between sneezing fits.
