Confession: I don’t read “romantasy.” Though I did read some Anne Rice novels in the late 80s and early 90s, if that counts. But given that yesterday was Valentine’s Day (digression into my simple V-Day: I took MBW and the HA out for barbeque and gave them both boxes of chocolates) I thought I might pose an appropriate question. What are the best romances in speculative fiction?
I would put Aragorn/Arwen and Beren/Luthien in the list. I don’t think it’s cheating to include two romances in one entry. They are essentially mirror images. It is hard to beat the father imposing a nearly impossible quest in order to win the hand of his daughter. I might need to take notes; the HA is nearing her teens.
Conan/Bêlit belongs if for nothing other than sheer intensity. The romance didn’t last long, but it packed in years worth of passion into its short duration.
Leto Atreides/Jessica. A romance that would induce a Bene Gesserit to defy orders is suggestive.
Any more sci-fi or fantasy couples you deem worthy of mention? And please don’t suggest Cersei and Jaime Lannister. I just ate.
If you find yourself in Tennessee at the end of this month you might consider attending ConFinement VII. I will be there. If you bring a book of mine I’ll sign it for you, if you don’t mind potentially diminishing the resale value.
