There was a time when bookshops were the domain primarily of discrete novels, or perhaps a sequel or two. Complete, single-volume stories sat at the apex of the bookstore ecosystem in the epoch before multi-volume epics ruled the shelves. But, for good or ill, their time has passed, their dominance supplanted by the era of… Continue reading The Five Best Fantasy Series. Plus Savage Journal Entry 3.

Tea With the Black Dragon. Add a Splash of Gin to Mine. Resurrected Post.
May 14, 2017 Tea With the Black Dragon. Add a Splash of Gin to Mine. Yesterday I finished R.A. MacAvoy’s Tea With the Black Dragon. Serendipitous timing I think considering today is Mother’s Day. If you haven’t read the book, I suppose that comment requires some explanation. Tea With the Black Dragon is a short… Continue reading Tea With the Black Dragon. Add a Splash of Gin to Mine. Don Pendleton’s Science Fiction? Resurrected Post.
April 9, 2017 Don Pendleton’s Science Fiction? You may have known it, but it came as a surprise to me: Don Pendleton wrote science fiction. Mind blown, right? Wait, maybe I should back up a step. December 18, 2016 Bits and Pieces, Odds and Ends, This and That Perihelion Science-Fiction magazine published a bit of flash fiction I was commissioned to write for an article on The End of the World. (Read that last phrase in a pretentious film trailer voice, with a dramatic pause between the second and third word.)… Continue reading Bits and Pieces, Odds and Ends, This and That. The Great Garrett Reread Part VI
Cruel Zinc Melodies This is a good one. As with the best mystery plots, the seemingly simple grows increasingly complex. There is a lot going on. And Cook is planting more clues regarding the Tinnie Tate/Garrett relationship. I’d ignored those last time through Cruel Zinc Melodies. I wanted only to see the good side of… Continue reading The Great Garrett Reread Part VI
Appendix N and the Witchy World of Andre Norton. Resurrected Post.
October 30, 2016 Appendix N and the Witchy World of Andre Norton Well, as a cover it certainly is a…cover. I come at last to Andre Norton, long a gap in my Appendix N reading. While she has always floated within my awareness as a reader, I remained unfamiliar with her works. I did pick… Continue reading Appendix N and the Witchy World of Andre Norton. Resurrected Post.
